  2. Apple school licensing

Apple school licensing, UAE

There is no single Apple school licence. There are three things, and only one of them costs money.

Apple School Manager is free. Jamf School, or whichever MDM you choose, is the licence you pay for, and it is priced per device. Apps and books are bought separately through Apple School Manager and stay with the school rather than with a pupil. We set all three up and handle the buying for schools, nurseries and universities across the UAE.

What is free, what is licensed

The three layers schools are usually quoted as one line.

Most confusion about Apple education licensing comes from treating the account layer, the management licence and the app purchasing as a single product. They are bought differently, they renew differently, and only two of them cost anything.

Apple School Manager, free

The account layer underneath everything else. It holds your organisation, your device registrations, your class rosters and your app and book purchases. It costs nothing, and it was not affected by the Apple Business consolidation in April 2026. It remains the education service.

Managed Apple Accounts, free

School-owned accounts for staff and pupils, created inside Apple School Manager rather than by pupils signing up themselves. They carry no licence cost and they are what makes a device recoverable when a pupil leaves.

Jamf School, licensed per device

The paid layer. Quoted per institution and per device, normally on an annual term aligned to the school year. This is the licence a bursar is usually asking about when they ask about the Apple school licence.

Apps and Books, paid per title

Formerly the Volume Purchase Programme. Apps and books are bought by the institution inside Apple School Manager, assigned to classes, year groups or devices, then reclaimed and reassigned. Free apps are still assigned this way, which matters for recovery.

Licence recovery when pupils leave

The quiet cost in every school Apple programme. If leavers are not processed, their app licences stay assigned to them, and over a few years an institution pays for a meaningful number of licences held by people who left.

Shared iPad and one-to-one

The ownership model changes what you buy. Shared iPad gives each pupil a personal experience on a device several of them use, which changes the device count, and therefore the licence count, quite a lot.

Procurement as a partner

We buy the management licences on the school behalf, invoice locally in the UAE, and keep the paperwork in one place instead of split between a reseller, a vendor portal and a purchase order nobody can find.

Renewals aligned to the school year

A renewal that lands mid-term is a renewal that gets rushed. We align dates to the academic calendar and raise the review before the year ends, not during the first week of it.

Safe Internet and filtering add-ons

Content filtering that follows a device home is licensed on top of the management platform. Worth deciding before devices go out, because retrofitting it after the first complaint is far more disruptive.

Why schools buy through us

We size the licence to the programme, not to the enrolment roll.

The count comes from the console

Device counts are reconciled against what is actually enrolled, which is usually lower than the figure a school has been renewing on. Cupboard devices and retired iPads are the usual difference.

We will say when a school does not need it

A genuinely Microsoft-first school with a handful of iPads should not buy an education MDM at all, and a school with a large staff Mac estate is sometimes better served by Jamf Pro than Jamf School. We say so before quoting.

We work to KHDA, ADEK and SPEA realities

Inspection evidence, parental consent for filtering, and devices that go home are not edge cases in the UAE, they are the normal case. The licensing conversation has to account for them.

The three layers side by side

What you pay for, and what you do not.

Every Apple school programme uses all three. Only the middle column is a recurring licence cost, and only the right column varies with what teachers ask for.

How we run it

Set up once, then reviewed against the academic year.

  1. 1

Establish or verify Apple School Manager

    Week 1

The free layer comes first regardless of which MDM you choose. Organisation verification, Managed Apple Accounts, roster source and device registration through your reseller all get confirmed before anything is licensed.

  2. 2

Count devices the way the licence counts them

    Week 1

One-to-one, shared iPad and staff Macs are counted differently and priced differently. We reconcile against the console and against how the programme actually runs, not against the enrolment roll.

  3. 3

Quote and procure the management licence

    Week 2

Jamf School in most cases, Jamf Pro where the staff estate justifies it, quoted per institution and placed as your partner so you hold one invoice and one contact.

  4. 4

Set up Apps and Books properly

    Week 2 to 3

Purchasing assigned to the institution rather than to individuals, assignment by class or year group, and a leaver routine that actually returns licences instead of an annual clean-up that gets postponed.

  5. 5

    Review before the year ends

    Annually

Device count, leaver processing, unused app licences and whether the add-ons earned their place, raised before the renewal date rather than in the week of it.

Education licensing questions

What schools ask us first.

There is not one. Apple School Manager is the free account layer and is not a licence you buy. The licence a school pays for is the device management platform, most commonly Jamf School, priced per device. Apps and books are bought separately inside Apple School Manager, in what used to be called the Volume Purchase Programme. When someone asks for an Apple school licence they almost always mean the second of those three.

Yes. There is no licence cost for Apple School Manager itself, for Managed Apple Accounts, or for registering devices to your organisation. What costs money is the management platform you connect to it and the apps and books you buy through it.

No, and this is the point of confusion we correct most often. Apple Business Manager, Business Essentials and Business Connect were consolidated into Apple Business for organisations. Apple School Manager was not part of that change and continues as the education service. Several schools read about the business-side changes and assumed the same applied to them.

Per device, quoted per institution, normally on an annual term that we align to the academic year. The count depends on how many devices are one-to-one, how many are shared, and whether staff Macs are in scope. We reconcile against the console before quoting.

Jamf School for a pupil device programme, because the teacher, student and parent apps are the reason it exists. Jamf Pro where the staff Mac estate is large and the compliance requirements are closer to a business than a classroom. Some institutions genuinely need both, and a university is the usual case.

They come back to the school, but only if the leaver is processed. Licences bought through Apps and Books belong to the institution rather than to a personal account, which is exactly why purchasing must run through Apple School Manager and never through a pupil account. We build leaver processing into the routine rather than leaving it as an annual clean-up.

Yes. We support schools, nurseries, training institutes and universities across Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah and the northern emirates, including KHDA, ADEK and SPEA licensed institutions.

Four answers: how many pupil devices, how many of those are shared rather than one-to-one, how many staff Macs are in scope, and whether the programme includes devices going home. That is enough for a scoped proposal rather than a range.
