What Is Apple Business Manager? A UAE Guide to ABM in 2026
Apple Business Manager is the free portal that makes company-owned Apple devices behave like company property. Here is what it does, what it needs, and how UAE businesses set it up: enrollment, Apps and Books, and Managed Apple Accounts.

Apple Business Manager (ABM) is Apple's free web portal for organisations, and it does three jobs: it ties the Apple devices your business buys to your organisation so they can enrol into management automatically, it lets you buy and assign apps in bulk under business ownership, and it gives your people Managed Apple Accounts that belong to the company instead of personal Apple IDs. If your UAE business owns Apple devices and is not registered, you are managing company property with consumer-grade tools. This guide explains each part and how to get set up.
The three pillars of ABM
1. Device enrollment (the zero-touch pipeline)
When a device is registered to your ABM and assigned to your MDM server, it enrols into management automatically during setup, the first time it is switched on, out of the sealed box. This is Automated Device Enrollment (ADE), and it changes two things fundamentally. First, provisioning stops being manual: no IT hands on the device, no golden image, no checklist. Second, the management is supervised and non-removable: a user cannot simply delete the profile and walk away with an unmanaged company device, and even a full factory reset returns the device to your enrolment. The full workflow is described on our zero-touch deployment page.
Devices get into ABM three ways: bought directly from Apple with your organisation ID attached, bought from an Apple Authorised Reseller who links the purchase to your ABM, or added afterwards using Apple Configurator for devices bought through other channels. The first two are automatic; the third is a manual step worth avoiding by buying through authorised channels in the first place.
2. Apps and Books (business-owned app licensing)
Apps and Books is ABM's bulk app licensing programme. The business acquires app licences centrally, the MDM pushes the apps to devices, and the licences remain company property: when an employee leaves or a device is retired, the licence returns to the pool and gets reassigned. Apps installed this way need no Apple ID on the device at all, which is what makes fully account-free kiosk and frontline deployments possible. Compare that with the unmanaged alternative, where apps are tangled up with whichever personal Apple ID happened to install them.
3. Managed Apple Accounts (identity the business controls)
Managed Apple Accounts are Apple accounts created and owned by your organisation. They can be federated with Microsoft Entra ID or Google Workspace so staff sign in with the credentials they already use, and they unlock features that require an organisational account, such as Shared iPad. Because the business owns the account, the business controls the data and the lifecycle: offboarding an employee does not mean negotiating with a personal iCloud account. The details, including federation and iCloud storage for business, are on our Managed Apple Accounts page.
What ABM is not
ABM is not an MDM. It holds no policies, deploys no configurations, and cannot lock or wipe a device. Think of it as the ownership and identity layer: it establishes that devices, apps, and accounts belong to your organisation, then hands day-to-day control to your MDM (Jamf Pro, Microsoft Intune, or another). ABM without MDM is a registry with nothing attached; MDM without ABM manages devices that can walk away. You want both, connected.
Setting up ABM for a UAE business
- Check your D-U-N-S number. Apple verifies organisations against Dun and Bradstreet records. Most established UAE trade licence entities already have one; if not, obtaining it is free but adds lead time
- Register at business.apple.com with an email on your company domain, and verify your details with Apple. Verification can involve a callback and takes days, not minutes
- Add and verify your domain if you plan to use Managed Apple Accounts, and set up federation with Entra ID or Google Workspace if you want single sign-on
- Link your reseller. Give your Apple Authorised Reseller your ABM organisation ID so every future purchase lands in your portal automatically
- Connect your MDM by exchanging server tokens, then set a default MDM assignment so new devices route to management without anyone touching the portal
None of these steps is difficult individually, but the sequencing and the identity decisions (domain capture, federation, account naming) are worth getting right the first time. Our Apple Business Manager service handles the full setup, and it is the standard first step in every Apple device management engagement we run.
Common ABM mistakes we clean up in Dubai tenants
Because ABM setup happens once and then fades into the background, mistakes made at setup tend to sit undiscovered until they bite. The ones we fix most often:
- No default MDM assignment. ABM is connected to the MDM, but new devices are not automatically routed to it, so each purchase quietly arrives unmanaged and someone has to notice. Set the default device assignment once and the pipeline stays closed
- The reseller was never linked. The business buys through an authorised reseller, but nobody exchanged the organisation ID, so years of eligible purchases never landed in ABM. Fixing this retroactively is possible for many purchases; fixing it going forward takes one email
- ABM administered by one personal mailbox. The sole administrator account belongs to someone who has since resigned, and recovery involves proving organisational ownership to Apple all over again. Keep at least two administrators on role-based company addresses
- Domain never verified. Managed Apple Accounts and federation both depend on domain verification; skipping it early makes the later identity project slower than it needed to be
- Grey-market purchasing habits. Devices bought outside authorised channels cannot be reseller-linked, forcing the Apple Configurator workaround on every unit, forever. The procurement policy is part of the ABM design, not separate from it
None of these is hard to avoid. All of them are tedious to unwind, which is the argument for setting the foundation up deliberately rather than incidentally.
Frequently asked questions
Does Apple Business Manager cost anything?
No. ABM itself is free. You pay for devices, for apps you choose to buy, and for whichever MDM platform you connect, but the portal and its programmes carry no charge from Apple.
Can we add the Apple devices we already own?
Often, yes. Devices bought from Apple or authorised resellers can frequently be linked retroactively through the reseller. Devices from other channels can be added with Apple Configurator, which for iPhones and iPads involves erasing the device as part of the process. Plan it as a phased project rather than a single weekend.
Do employees need Apple IDs on managed devices?
Not necessarily. Apps deploy through Apps and Books without any account on the device. Where people do need an account (for iCloud sync or Shared iPad), Managed Apple Accounts provide one the business owns. Personal Apple IDs on company devices become a choice you control, not an inevitability.
Is ABM relevant if we only have iPhones, no Macs?
Completely. ADE, Apps and Books, and Managed Apple Accounts apply to iPhone and iPad exactly as they do to Mac, and supervised iPhone fleets arguably benefit most, since supervision unlocks restrictions that unsupervised phones cannot enforce.
Start with the foundation
Every well-managed Apple fleet in Dubai sits on top of a properly configured ABM. We set it up as an official Apple Jamf Partner, connect it to your MDM, and wire the purchasing channel so it stays current. Begin at Apple Business Manager setup or get in touch.
