IT comparisons and decision guides

Honest X vs Y comparisons, written by engineers who deploy both sides.

Most comparison pages are written by whoever sells one of the two products, and it shows. Ours are written by the engineers who install, migrate and support both options for UAE businesses, so we know where each one genuinely wins, where the marketing overstates it, and which questions actually decide the choice for a company your size. Pick your decision below and you will get a straight answer, including when the right answer is the option we earn less from.

How we compare

The method behind every verdict on this site.

A comparison is only useful if you can trust how it was made. These four rules apply to every guide linked below, and if a guide ever fails one of them we would rather pull it than leave it up.

Hands-on before we write

Every comparison comes from deploying, migrating and supporting both options in production for real UAE clients. Feature tables copied from datasheets miss what decides the choice in practice: how the product behaves at renewal, what breaks during migration, and what support is like on a bad day.

No vendor kickback bias

Where we hold partnerships on both sides of a comparison, we say so in the guide. Recommending either option pays broadly the same, and recommending the wrong one costs us the client within a year, so the incentives genuinely point at getting it right. We have written verdicts that favoured the option with the thinner margin.

The verdict depends on your company, and we say when

A ten-person agency and a regulated two-hundred-seat firm should often choose differently. Each guide states the deciding factors: what you already license, headcount, in-house skills, regulatory obligations and where the business is heading. When one option wins outright for almost everyone, we say that plainly too.

UAE specifics, not translated US content

Licensing terms, data residency, regulator expectations, distributor availability and support coverage all differ here. Every guide is checked against what is actually available and enforceable in this market, not translated from content written for a US audience.

The comparisons

Pick your decision.

Each guide gives you the decision in one line up front, then the full working underneath: where each option wins, what it costs you in effort to switch, and the questions that settle it for your situation.

Contract and productivity platform

The two decisions almost every company faces first: what shape of IT support to buy, and which productivity suite to run the business on.

  • Managed IT vs IT AMCIf you want an outcome owned end to end, choose managed IT; if you want defined maintenance visits and a support line, an AMC is enough.
  • Microsoft 365 vs Google WorkspaceMicrosoft 365 wins for most UAE businesses on compliance tooling and desktop Office; Workspace wins for browser-native teams that live in shared docs.

Cloud desktops and identity

Microsoft against Microsoft: two products that overlap on purpose, where the right answer is decided by scale, admin skills and what you already license.

  • Azure Virtual Desktop vs Windows 365Windows 365 for predictable per-user simplicity, AVD for pooled scale and control, and the crossover point sits lower than most people expect.
  • Entra ID P1 vs P2P1 covers Conditional Access and most day-to-day identity security; P2 earns its uplift once you need risk-based policies and privileged access governance.

Devices and network security

Apple fleet management and the perimeter firewall: decisions where the honest answer is often the tool you already own, or the one your team can actually run.

  • Jamf vs Intune for macOSIntune if Macs are a minority in a Microsoft estate you already license; Jamf once the Mac fleet is large enough to deserve a specialist platform.
  • Jamf Now vs Jamf ProJamf Now for a small fleet with simple needs, Jamf Pro when you need policies, smart groups and automation, and check Intune before paying for either.
  • Sophos vs FortinetSophos for synchronized endpoint-and-firewall security managed from one console; Fortinet for raw throughput and larger or multi-site networks.
Why trust these guides

Four reasons this is not another affiliate comparison site.

We support whichever option you choose

These guides are not funnels to one answer. We deploy and support both sides of every comparison listed here, so the recommendation does not change what we can do for you afterwards. If you read a guide, choose the other option, and ask us to implement it, that is a normal Tuesday.

We name the loser cases, not just the winner

Every guide includes the situations where the generally weaker option is genuinely the right call, because those situations exist for every product pair we have ever compared. A comparison that never concedes anything is an advert with a table in it.

We have migrated clients in both directions

For every pair on this page we have moved companies from A to B and from B to A. That is the fastest education there is in what each product actually does well, because migration is where the marketing claims meet the export files.

Guides get updated when the products change

Vendors reshuffle bundles, rename tiers and move features between plans constantly. When a change is big enough to alter a verdict, we update the guide rather than leaving a stale conclusion up because it once ranked well.

Do it yourself

How to run your own comparison.

The same working method we use internally, in a form you can apply to any two options, including pairs we have not written up yet. It takes a few hours of honest effort and it beats any amount of reading reviews.

Before you look at either product

  • Write down the problem you are solving in one sentence
If you cannot, you are shopping for a product rather than a solution, and both vendors will happily sell you one.
  • List what you already own and license
The most common mistake in this market is paying for a product whose capability is already in a Microsoft bundle you hold.
  • Name the constraints that cannot move
Regulatory obligations, data residency, a parent-company standard. Constraints eliminate options faster than features select them.

While you evaluate

  • Trial both with your real workload, not the demo data
Products behave differently at your file sizes and user count. A demo tenant proves nothing you can act on.
  • Test the exit before you enter
Ask each vendor how you would leave: what exports, in what format, at what notice. The answer predicts year three of the relationship.
  • Score the admin burden honestly
The stronger product run badly loses to the simpler product run well. Match the choice to the skills your team actually has.

Before you sign

  • Get the migration effort priced as part of the decision
An option that is marginally better but expensive to reach is usually the wrong choice.
  • Check UAE support and supply, not global claims
Confirm local distributor stock, renewal handling and where support sits during UAE business hours.
  • Decide the review date at purchase time
Every choice deserves a revisit as the products and your company change. Put it in the calendar while you still remember why you chose.
Coming next

The comparisons buyers ask us for next.

These are the decisions that come up most often in scoping calls but do not have a published guide yet. They are being written in the same hands-on method, so they take time. If one of these is your live decision, ask us directly and you will get the current working answer on a call rather than waiting for the page.

Veeam vs Acronis

Two capable backup platforms with genuinely different philosophies: infrastructure-first versus all-in-one with endpoint security bundled. The deciding factors are what you are protecting and who will operate it.

Teams Phone vs 3CX

The business phone decision for UAE companies, where TDRA-licensed SIP trunk availability and what you already pay Microsoft shape the answer as much as the feature lists do.

Meraki vs UniFi

Cloud-managed networking at two very different commercial models: a recurring licence with polished support against buy-once hardware you largely support yourself.

Colocation vs cloud

When keeping your own hardware in a Tier III facility beats moving the workload to Azure or AWS, and the workload profiles where the sums genuinely favour each side.

In-house IT vs MSP

The staffing decision underneath every other decision on this page: when to hire, when to outsource, and the co-managed middle ground that suits more UAE companies than either extreme.

Comparison FAQ

What buyers ask about these guides.

By structure rather than by promise. We hold partnerships and delivery capability on both sides of every comparison we publish, so the recommendation does not change our ability to win the work. The margin difference between the two options in a pair is small, and the cost of recommending the wrong one is losing the client at first renewal, so the incentive genuinely points at accuracy. Every guide states the cases where each option wins, several published verdicts favour the option that pays us less, and where a comparison involves a product we cannot deliver at all, the guide says so plainly.

Yes, and this happens regularly. Your situation may simply be one where the other answer is right, or the decision may already be made for reasons the guide does not capture: a group standard, an existing contract, a team that knows one product deeply. We deploy and support both sides of every pair on this page. What we will not do is pretend a choice is optimal when we can see it is not, so if we think your setup is fighting you, we will say so once, clearly, and then support it properly either way.

Then the honest output of the comparison is a third answer, and that is more common than comparison pages admit. Sometimes the right choice is a product outside the pair, sometimes the smaller edition of one of the two, and sometimes doing nothing because the capability already exists in something you own. A scoping call is the fastest way to find out: we look at what you run and what problem you are actually solving, and we tell you what we would deploy in your position. If that is a product we do not sell, you get that answer anyway.

For most pairs, yes: we hold partner or reseller relationships on both sides, which is what makes neutrality commercially possible rather than just claimed. Where the relationship is one-sided or absent, the guide says so explicitly. What we never do is accept payment for placement or ranking: nobody can buy a verdict on this site, and no vendor sees a guide before it is published.

Yes. The checklist on this page is the same method we use, and for a decision with real money attached most companies prefer us to run it: we inventory what you own, define the deciding criteria with you, trial both options against your actual workload where practical, and give you a written recommendation with the reasoning shown. You keep the document whether or not we do the implementation, and the written trail also answers the auditor or the board when someone later asks why this option was chosen.

Almost never, and a guide verdict alone is not a reason to pay exit penalties. The right move is usually to run the contract to term while preparing the switch: fix what can be fixed, avoid deepening the lock-in with new add-ons, and time the migration to land at renewal. Sometimes that preparation reveals the incumbent is fine once configured properly, which is a cheaper discovery than a migration. If the current option is actively causing losses, security exposure or compliance failure, that changes the sums, and we will tell you honestly which side of that line you are on.

The products are global; the decision inputs are not. Licensing bundles are sold differently by region, data residency depends on which cloud regions exist here, sector regulators and free zone authorities impose requirements that shift the verdict, hardware runs through local distributors with their own stock reality, and support coverage during UAE business hours varies widely between vendors. A comparison written for a US audience can be directionally right and practically wrong here, so our guides are checked against what you can actually buy, license and get supported in this market.

Whenever a product change is large enough to affect the verdict or the deciding factors, rather than on a fixed calendar. Vendors rename tiers, move features between plans and change bundling frequently, and most of those changes do not alter the decision. When one does, we update the guide. If you are reading one at the point of a major vendor announcement, ask us before acting on it and we will tell you whether the announcement changes the answer.

No, deliberately. Published numbers go stale quickly, vendor prices vary by agreement, bundle and region, and a price that is right for a ten-seat company misleads a hundred-seat one. The guides cover the shape of the cost instead: which option is per-user versus consumption-based, where the hidden costs sit, and what the switching effort looks like. For actual numbers, ask us and we will quote both options against your headcount and licensing position.

Yes. The published guides cover the decisions we are asked about most often, but we run one-off comparisons for clients regularly, including niche or sector-specific pairs. If we have hands-on experience with both options, you get the same treatment as a published guide, in private, against your specific situation. If we genuinely lack depth on one side, we say so up front rather than improvising a verdict, and we can usually still help you structure the evaluation so you reach a sound answer yourself.
